A Directory of Non-Canon Giant Robo Pairings

Home | Toys | Video | Comics & Books | Games | Observations | About

Since 2006, I've trekked through Japanese fansites like some sort of hermit, with only a metaphorical satchel to carry the treasures I find, and a metaphorical cane to fend off the horrors. I will never stop, as continuing onward is merely my nature. I have pictures of Vogler with kitty ears (gomen.jpg), playing the piano (furanken_and_piano.jpg), and as a fluffy white chibi (ebil.png). I know which sites have closed in the past year, and which are just opening. And it hasn't been a Sunday until I've spent about an hour digging through Internet Archive in search of pictures that might be archived from a dead site whose link I just discovered.

I know where you can find shotacon or old man slash. I've seen everything there is to the Giant Robo fanon, also known as the fan-maintained universe continuity.

This is the prize gem of my collection. I can't even remember where I found it, and I don't have any other art by the same artist. It shows you pretty much every pairing either in the show or its fanon and every character I care about (but where's Youshi?!), and it made Kenji look like Spike Spiegel. I love this picture.

Recent events have motivated me to make this page, sort of as a mix of reference page and a gong show. Everything on this page exists, but isn't classified as reality in the actual Giant Robo series including the Ginrei Specials. Let's take a minute to establish the canon...
  • Youshi and Taisou are married.
  • Kenji and Ginrei have been having some sort of affair since Ginrei was in her mid-teens. This is creepy in retrospect.
  • Tetsugyu is hopelessly pining over Ginrei.
  • Chujo and Go are having some sort of relationship behind the scenes. I had to argue with a girl over this, and I shouldn't have to. Go is gayer than a big pink sparkly unicorn, and he and Chujo are the only men in the Ginrei Special who flirt with each other. My verdict stands.

The following pairings will be categorized as either "Reasonable" (as in "Yeah, it could happen") or "Unfathomable" (as in "Are you shitting me?"). Popularity scales are given from Low, Medium and High, judging by art availability and how likely a person is to think of and/or support a certain pairing.

Alberto & Taisou
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: High
The one rule of fans is how if a male character is in the room with another man for more than two seconds, all the fujoushi assume they're playing tonsil hockey off-screen. True character rivalries hoist this assumption up to levels of brain-searing canon, and that's what happened to Taisou and Alberto here. The two hate each other but enjoy fighting one another, right up to when Alberto blows a hole in Taisou's stomach.
Is it reasonable? It certainly is not, when you consider Taisou is married to Youshi and truly loves her, but Alberto/Taisou was a big deal for several years. For almost eight years, this was the only Giant Robo fan fiction on FF.net, until a friend and I flooded it with ChuGo and KenGin. Japanese Alberto fans are shifting their interests over to other pairings with Alberto, including...

Alberto & Cervantes
Status: Reasonable
Popularity: High
The reason Alberto is trying to mess with Taisou and company in the first place is because Cervantes died, and it's established that the two were at least close friends before the show's current timeline. It seems that at least two years ago, all the Japanese fujoushi took a step back and realized the guy they were making Alberto shag was already married to a giant woman, and Alberto was part of a team with like fifteen dudes. (Here's the pairing ringleader.) Nobody really knows much about Daisaku's eccentric uncle, but I will fight to the death on the matter of if Cervantes is gay. If Go is a unicorn, Cervantes is a flamingo.

Ivan & Rosa
Status: Reasonable
Popularity: High
In the first Ginrei Special, Alberto has an exact clone of Ginrei constructed, this clone being angrier-looking and garbed in black and blue, and the clone proceeds to grab Ginrei's left boob and electrocute her. Ginrei kicks her aside and she lands in a heap. The clone is on screen for exactly one minute and thirty-four seconds.
The Japanese fandom found Ginrei's clone fascinating, and set out to make her an individual, renaming her "Rosa" for the rose emblem on her dress. When you see fan art of her, she is elegant and conniving, and somehow became Ivan's companion much like Boris and Natasha. It's never explicitly stated if Rosa made it out of the BF base's explosion, but Enshaku has a portal under his cloak, so Alberto could have just shoved her unconscious body in there and flown off. Plus, Ivan doesn't get paired with half-near anyone, and his skill with the ladies is evident in the second Ginrei Special. He and Rosa are pretty good a couple, even if they don't ever stand in the same room.

Taisou & Tetsugyu
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Medium
This pairing is the secret shame of anyone who likes it. I've been here. It's good for fluffy goo-goo aniki crap, but any further than that and it's just disturbing. It's the pairing you go for when you're temporarily bored by all other pairings. Between the art of Tetsugyu and Taisou being brotherly and goofing around are the occasional pictures of them sitting around and blushing, but it's more of the artist testing to see if she can go further with the pairing. Nobody does, because it just makes them feel guilty.

Fitzgerald & Mask the Red
Status: Reasonable
Popularity: High
We only see these two for a few minutes in the end of OVA 6 and the beginning of OVA 7. Red, a masked teenage bishounen, shows up sitting in the cleavage of a giant robot made of stone, and Fitzgerald cuts people in half by snapping his fingers. When Ginrei teleports everyone out of the area, Fitzgerald gets embedded in a cliff, and Red stabs him in the chest before running off with their samurai friend Doki. Bishounen + rivalry = an extremely powerful fujoushi fanbase.
Japanese fans consider them straight-up canon, and the English fans just follow along for the ride. Red and Fitzgerald's relationship is never really elaborated on, but all we know is that Red betrayed Fitzgerald by leaving him in the rock and leaving with Doki. So, it's at least possible.

Go & Ginrei
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Low
Not only is this one creepy because Go is pushing thirty and Ginrei is nineteen, but it's saddening because the person putting them together is assuming Go likes women, much less one he raised. Ginrei was 8 or 9 when the Bashtarle incident happened, and Go was 18. From there, Go took her under his wing and became her family, and he could best be described as an uncle. So, if you're turned on by this, Go's homosexuality is the least of your problems.
In this pairing, Ginrei is turned into either an tsundere who senses Go and Chujo are up to something and gets in the way of their relationship, or an adoring glommy flirt. It's out of character for Ginrei, it completely neglects Kenji and that certain scene in the final episode, and it neglects the fact that Go is Ginrei's big gay uncle. You won't see this one often, and when you do, it feels like you're watching Liberace try to kiss a woman. You just feel really bad for him.

Kenji & Daisaku
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Medium
The only reasonable pairing Kenji Murasame will ever be involved in is one with a teenage girl. That is the truth, and it will not change. His only other options are two small boys, Ms. Takamizawa, his brothers, or random men.
Kenji has been around as a guardian for Daisaku in the past, rescued him, and used to be friends with his father. Daisaku seems to think Kenji is a huge badass, but doesn't like Kenji's willingness to repeatedly sacrifice himself. When you add in how Kenji kind of hugs Daisaku and protects him from getting cut by Fitzgerald, you get pretty solid grounds for pairing...if not for the fact that Daisaku is a little boy.
There's one huge site devoted to art of the two, but making everything more awkward, Daisaku is drawn to look younger. You've been warned.

Fitzgerald & Kenji
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Low
I wish I was kidding when I say this exists.
I mentioned earlier that Fitzgerald shows up, cuts the crap out of Kenji and watches him die. The two are in the same room for exactly ninety seconds, and during that time, Kenji is trying to protect his girlfriend and a pubescent boy from some chode dancing around in front of him. So, of course two people in Japan paired them together...pick your favourite flavour, chibi or scratchy and unintelligible. The chibi Kenji stuff is so adorable I could weep, until Fitz gets thrown in. The scratchy stuff is insane, as Kenji is reduced to a weepy sack of crap living with Fitz, with some heartwarming sequences like Kenji masturbating and crying in the living room while Fitz is gone, and Fitz forcing him to sit in the shower as punishment.
My complaints aside of someone having the nerve to turn an utter beast of a man into a weepy idiot, there is literally no ground for this pairing to stand on.

Kaei & Kashin
Status: Reasonable
Popularity: Medium
Kashin, or as I called him before, "the guy who wouldn't let Daisaku cross the crack in the ground" hangs around with Kaei during the end of the series. Their personalities are not quite elaborated on beyond "Kaei is dignified and brave" and "Kashin is irritable, thirsts for justice and likes standing behind Kaei". People like all sorts of characters in the show regardless of whether or not they get embellished on, but these two are very much the same as they were in Yokoyama's Sangokushi series, so most Japanese fans carry over what they see into the GR canon, which has resulted in gobs of pairings between Kaei and Kashin's men, easily making it the first army that is 75% gay.

Kenji & Genya
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Low
This pairing exists in very mild doses, and Japanese site Rank 119 is one of the ringleaders (have fun navigating through that site) with the mild act of insinuation. Kenji and Genya don't ever meet, so a serious pairing is impossible. Although I'd love to see what could start this relationship, if FitzKen can get away with existing...
"I see you've been dating my sister since she was fifteen. Here, hold still while I put my penis in you."

Daisaku & Sunny
Status: Reasonable
Popularity: High
Sunny and Daisaku are the youngest members of either organization they belong to, with the exception that in the Japanese fanon, Sunny has become BF's adorable little startlet princess. It's never really said how old Sunny is, but she's approximately Daisaku's age. There's really nothing offensive about the idea of these two being paired; they could easily run into each other on a mission, and they're both in the same age group. It's all cool here.

Big Fire & Sunny
Status: Reasonable
Popularity: Medium
This is even more possible, figuring in that both kids are on the same side, and Big Fire is around Sunny's age. All we know about him is that he's been sleeping naked in a glass capsule for some time now, has a pet panther, and is really just a pawn in Komei's plan to make the viewers cry over an unfufilled sequel hook. Big Fire, judging by appearances, is just a quiet, calm kid with a crapload of powers. Sunny would be safe around him.

Genya & Ginrei
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Low
Well, there goes that stability we just found.
Remember on my Eighteen Questions article, when I brought up seeing a website featuring art of "Genya dancing with panties and groping his sister"? I was, in fact, not lying. (That link is extremely not-safe-for-work, unless you work in an environment where looking at pictures of a cartoon character grabbing his testicles is okay.)
Genya and Ginrei, otherwise known as Emmanuel and Farmelle Von Vogler were separated for ten years by the Bashtarle Incident, and Ginrei grew up to be a shapely young secret agent while Genya became a member of Nelson. They have a ten year age difference, and are brother and sister. Now imagine them getting married.
That's not even the most corrupting thing I can link to on that blog...please, don't support this pairing, or Dr. Vogler will come back from the grave just to strangle you.

Hanzui & Issei
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Medium
This pairing is a moderately-recent invention that just so happens to make no damn sense. Hanzui and Issei don't ever go near each other in the OVAs, and possibly aren't even aware of each others' existance. Sunny's uncle and an old dwarf? Whenever you do see this pairing, Issei becomes some sort of blushing, timid chibi, which is also known as eight hundred buckets of unsettling.

Youshi & Issei
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Medium
Issei is just the same in this pairing as he is in the above, except for the fact that he's usually being nuzzled by Taisou's giant blue wife. It's true Youshi and Issei do hang out in the show, and even possible that Issei could hold mild feelings for her, but Issei is more of an assistant, and Youshi loves Taisou. As you may know by now, the more you betray a canon relationship to make a pairing that caters to your own tastes, that non-canon couple becomes less stable.

Franken Von Vogler & Dr. Shizuma
Status: Unfathomable
Popularity: Low
Oh of course, all the while they were working on the Shizuma Drive, Shizuma and Vogler were packing fudge. I've seen this on two different large fansites, and it seems more like Vogler fangirls getting desperate and trying to pair him with someone.
Look, if Yasuhiro Imagawa wants you to think someone is gay, he'll cram in visual innuendos like stuffing in a Christmas turkey. In a way, it's wonderful how much diversity he'll put into his casts, but in another way it's pandering and maybe a little unsettling.
