Sonic Drift 2

It's been a long time now, but today I bring you another game article. This game is slightly unknown, but those who find it will discover it to be rather fun. I'm talking about...

SSSSSONIC DRIFT, TWO!

The main hype about this game is that Sonic is in a car. Yes, now while half of you will go "That's nice, SEGA." and continue playing the game, some people I've met go absolutely insane pointing out how Sonic is driving a Maserati. Disturbed fanboys aside, let me give you a little history on this game...this succeeds the obvious 'Sonic Drift', which was lame and not very well developed. You had only four characters to choose from, whereas in this version, you got...

Amy, Tails, Sonic, Knuckles, Metal Sonic, Eggman, and...Fang/Nack! Anyone remember him?

For you new-age Sonic kids, this sexy little weasel is Nack (also Fang the Sniper), whom is considered to be Rouge the Bat's predecessor. Nack appeared in only three games and the comic books and once got kicked in the nuts by Princess Sally. Moving on.

Each character has a special power that can be activated by getting at least two rings and pressing on the control stick. Sonic & Metal speed up, Knuckles & Tails can jump (Tails's is much better), Eggman shoots out a spiked bomb, Amy throws a heart that makes your controls slip, and Fang throws an 'oil slick' that looks like rabbit crap.

You can either play with a partner, play a six-track race, or just drive around like an idiot on the free run track. Chaos Grand Prix is more fun and you can play "Purple", "White" or "Blue" (A.K.A. easy, medium and hard). Along the tracks, depending on which colour you take, you'll find these items...

Once again, these are each activated by the control. So we'll start on any of the Grand Prix races, and meet a select type of tracks...

GREEN HILL ZONE
This isn't so bad, with the exception of those damn >> signs. They'd display before a sharp corner, but then you'd drive right into the sign and be derailed, then everyone would drive past you before you could get back on the road.

FRIGGIN' ABYSS-SURROUNDED BRICK PATH
This track is possibly the most unpleasant one in existance. If you drive off the path, YOU DRIVE OFF THE PATH, and it takes a long time for the inexplicabe robot crane arm to pick you up. By the time that happens, you're already in last place.

Did I mention that I hate the tracks that are just repetitive circles? The ones with a definite end seem to be much more fun. As well, if you play as a character that throws a weapon as an ability, there's no chance of you coming up the same path and running into that same weapon you threw moments ago.

FRIGGIN' TUNNEL WITH THE FRIGGIN' FLYING ROCKS AND TREMORS AND FRIGGIN' BAD CONTROLS
This has a definite end, yes, but it will piss you off to the highest level of piss-tivity. Unless you manage to somewhat master this, you'll be jumping up and down with the controller and screaming, trying to pull Tails out of the tunnel gutter. AAAAGH.

GREEN HILL ZONE WITH MAAAGIC BALLOONS
Simply imagine the previous zone, but with an ending place and tricoloured spheres here and there. The balloons, when you hit one, cause the screen to flash white and send you further up the track. Yet it's a pain in the butt when you're driving along and suddenly Eggman starts driving in front of you, and then you hit him and get derailed. Yes, it's happened.

ICY TRACK OF 90 DELIGHT
I kinda like this track. The road is a little slippery, which often sends you into off-track trees, but at two special turns, you get to drive ninety degrees on a wall ramp! It may not sound like much, but it's one of the highlights of the Prix. You'll be so delerious from the tunnel track that anything else is fun.

SHARP CORNERS IN FRIGGIN' SPACE

This is the second last track in the Blue Prix, where you're all racing to get to Eggman's Death Star lookalike. There are plenty of turns that simply go "TURN! SCREEEEECH" and may send you off the track and into the abyss of space. But the omnipresent robot claw is always there to fish you out and place you back on the track. Maybe it's one of Eggman's, programmed to make you race him no matter what. :O

EGGMAN'S FACE
You're now in the Death-Star-But-Not-Really, and the final challenge is to drive around a giant imprint of his face. Simple, and no big deal to finish. It's no harder than the Green Hill Zone, EXCEPT with absolutely no off-road obstacles. Dr. Eggman may be insane, but even he hates driving into poorly-placed decoratia.

Now, it's time to announce the...

SUUPAA TOKUSHOU SOHRO*!
*Super Special Prize Track!

If you are some kind of wizard, try to play the Blue Prix and win all six rounds. If you succeed, you'll get to play a special one-on-one round! If you play as:

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy   =  race Eggman
Eggman, Metal Sonic, or Nack   =   race Sonic

And if you win that, you get to see the credits with special music, along with a special group picture of everyone...

Is Nack holding a gun to Amy's head? 'Cause it looks like Nack's holding a gun to Amy's head.

A few tips for racing in the Prix...as soon as you start the race - specifically when he first starting light flashes - hold down the A button (Gamecube controls). This will make you go significantly faster, and hopefully send you ahead of the mob.
When you win, not only do you get a Chaos Emerald, but you get placed first on the track in the next round. Similarily, if you get in fourth or third, you'll be placed there also.

(Also, why is everyone giving away the Emeralds like candy in the old games? In Sonic the Fighters, everybody beat the hell out of each other just so they could use them as rocket fuel. Maybe the reason the Emeralds are so sought after in the new games if because they're the last ones completely.)

On the winner rank list that displays between each round, you get to see your "score" and how many emeralds you have. As well, you getto see your characte's mood icon, depending on if they'e come in first, middle or last..

Nothing beats Nack's "losing" face:

AAAAAAAGH! ZOMBIE WEASEL!
Then again, it looks more like the face that he made when Sally knee'd him. You know what I'm saying?

All in all, it's a very fun game, and better than its predescessor. You can find it in some random places online, or on the Sonic Gems Collection (Gamecube and Playstation 2). Go find it.
